Happy Holi!

Wow. Ummmmm, that was an experience of a lifetime! There’s nothing quite like throwing colors, dork dancing, and being with a group of close friends. This is what happened this past Saturday at Surabhi’s Holi Festival event. Dorks in our community came together to celebrate life, love, and the triumph of good > evil. Yes, happy Holi!

For us, this festival was something new, but the spirit of free dancing was something very familiar. Dork Dancers were well practiced in this way, free to let loose, be themselves, and dance crazy to the music. As a group, we shared a couple special moments.

The music went off, but Thai’s & Bence’s voice continued. They continued screaming the beat of the song, and dorks followed their lead. When the music stopped, we created it; still goofing around, playing with each other.

We formed a circle. Bence and Nhan extended their arms, and dorks went underneath. Surabhi, the host of the event, spent time with us, dancing bollywood. We followed her moves. We lead a line, and guided the crowd off the concrete and into the beach. Again, we formed a circle, this time much bigger. We ran towards the center and jumped. Colors brought out, then thrown. Water was next.

It was a bit of a mess. But it was a fun mess. The kind of mess that you would hope for at Holi Festival. Some attendees were enjoying alcoholic drinks, but dorks were notably sober, passing on the alcohol, still carrying that sense of connection and letting loose.

This was the first time Dork Dancing changed location, asked for an entrance fee, and participated in an event with alcohol, but we felt good about it. Our dance is for mental health, and we told people about that, without getting lost in our own stuff. Today was Holi festival and we were excited for the invitation to join.

At 5PM, we hosted a large Dork Dancing, Bollywood style. Microphone required. Move by move, we made things up, teaching one another Dork Bollywood. Play, on this day, was next level. And we totally enjoyed.

The Dork Dancing community, in particular, feels very grateful for your invitation and inclusion for our cause, community, and spirit of dance at the festival. We are proud of you. Thanks for being a dork, and spreading your joy through your identity, culture, and spirit! #dorkdancing for mental health at #holifestival
