Dork Art Hits the Ground Running
We have explained before Why Dorks Make Art, but have yet to fully communicate that this event is now hitting the ground running. Dork Art hosted a few events online, during lockdown, and now Dork Art has done its thing in person too.
Dork Art organized people together in a physical space for the first time on October 10th, 2020, to help celebrate World Mental Health Day at our Dork Party. About 15 or so people showed up to the event, coming together to explore this topic of mental health through artistic prompts.
Over the past week, Da Nang has been taken over by persistent rain, strong winds, and even storms. We have danced some in between rain, but mostly, it’s been challenging for many. We have been indoors for so long now. Time indoors is an extension of two lockdowns that already has totaled more than 2 months. Lockdowns & rain in Vietnam are strict and heavy. Given this, Kyana, the Dork Art host, decided to give people a space to express emotions related to the weather, processing this idea and theme with a paint and brush.
Dork Artists came together, enjoying the curiosities of their minds and hands. How did they feel? What would they create? And what would be communicated? It’s something light, or heavy, or somewhere in between — depending on the dork artist and what she or he wishes to explore.
For many of us, finding a space, time, and place to create art is something new. For some, art is already a hobby and mental health practice. But what is most fun and beautiful is coming together, despite or because of our unique differences. While creating art, we share conversation, learning from each other’s relationships to ourselves and how we express and process emotions and ideas.
Congratulations Kyana on hosting such a fun, relaxed and successful in-person event! Every step of the journey is worth celebrating. This is just one of many.
