New Dance Class Coming Soon

IMG_4084.jpeg

I am a little boy and my parents want to sign me up for dance classes. I’ve never been exposed to dance lessons but my parents think it’s worth trying. They go to some dance studio and look at the menu of offerings. There’s tango, salsa, hip hop, ballroom, and yes, dork dancing too. WHY NOT?!

Dork Dancing like these other classes of dance is a skill and it can be taught. It’s arguably the most important dance class of them all because it’s Dance 101, the intro class that none of us got growing up.

We skipped it. We missed it. No, it was actually never there.

That’s why so many of us struggle with dance. We didn’t learn how to dork dance, which helps teach how to let go & enjoy dance for the sake of it. Many know how to dork dance already on their own, but not within the context of a group. If social dancing is not taught to us deliberately or intentionally, then we need to learn that on our own. Do we like dancing alongside others, or do we not?

Learning how to dance (instead of being deliberately taught) now falls to the whims of the culture we are living in. And in many societies, dance isn’t so socially comfortable. It’s mostly for spaces with alcohol. And so, you learn to be uncomfortable like those older, more inhibited adults who failed to teach you how to dance because they never learned themselves how to let loose.

This needs to change. Dancing is not only physical exercise, but mental and spiritual too; good for the body, mind, and soul. Dancing is really important.

Our collective decision to invest in dance, or to not, can influence the quality of life and longevity across all ages, identities, and societies. Physically, mentally, spiritually stronger. A healthier, happier & more connected population. That’s what dance gives.

Dork Dancing can integrate and advance dance culture from something that feels exclusive & performative to something more inclusive & care-free, and in that way, help spread its “INSANE” benefits.

Dancing doesn’t need to only be for those with claim to tremendous rhythm. It can be for anyone who enjoys moving freely to music, on the beat or off. For us, that’s what the essence of dancing is about. That’s what dork dancing can teach.

We think LEARNING to enjoy dance is what’s most important. And we think dork dancing can help most with that. It deserves its own class on the list, next to tango, salsa, hip hop, and ballroom.

After looking at the list, I peeked through the glass windows and saw how they danced. It was too intimidating. Too together. It looks really difficult and kind of stressful too. I was deceived.

Dork dancing isn’t offered yet. Not here, nor in school.

No I’d rather something different. I’m not a dancer. I don’t want to be one. Not for me. Let me try something else instead.

Dork Dancing depends entirely on charitable giving. We hope you may consider supporting. We offer some fun rewards too.
